A relaxed way to explore stuttering support with peers who get it

Speech can feel harder in the moments that matter. Like class discussions or meeting someone new.
Do you:

  • avoid certain situations because you’re worried about stuttering
  • wish you could meet other young people who stutter.

If that sound like you, our new drop-in sessions might be a good next step.

Groups are starting now and are currently free of charge.

A relaxed and social way to try out stuttering support

Drop-in sessions are an easy way to explore if group stuttering support is for you. They’re also an ideal introduction to our 5-day intensive group program.

Each session brings together practical speech strategies and psychological support for the thoughts and feelings that often come with stuttering. And there’s plenty of time to socialise and practice with other young people who know what it’s like to stutter.

What they’ll gain

Every young person's experience is different, so what you take from drop-in sessions will look different too. Things you can expect include:

  • a safe, welcoming space to meet peers who stutter
  • a better understanding of stuttering and how stuttering support works
  • a chance to start thinking about your own goals
  • strategies for managing the emotional side of stuttering
  • more confidence in everyday communication.

How it works

Every drop-in session includes:

  • a check-in when you can share how things have been going, if you'd like to
  • a workshop or activity
  • time to practise and connect.

Every session touches on speech, confidence and communication, and the psychological side of stuttering.

Getting started

When you get in touch, we'll call you for a casual chat, not a formal assessment. It's a chance for us to make sure the drop-in sessions are a good fit and for you to ask any questions. We can do this over the phone.

We don't exclude people based on a diagnosis or a co-occurring condition. The main thing we're checking is that you'll be able to understand what's covered in sessions and take part in a way that works for you.

Frequently asked questions

.

.

Are participants grouped with similarly aged peers?

We consider age when planning each session and try to group similarly aged peers together for activities where possible.

Who runs the sessions?

Drop-in sessions are run by qualified speech pathologists. The program is co-designed by speech pathologists and psychologists with lived experience of stuttering.

How much does it cost?

Thanks to a philanthropic gift from Channel Foundation, our first round of drop-in and intensive group sessions is free. Future programs may involve a fee.

Are the groups in-person only?

No. Drop-in sessions run both in person at our Carlton clinic and online via Zoom.

How big are the groups?

Sessions will be run as small groups of 5 to 10 young people.

Are the drop-in sessions a prerequisite for the intensive group sessions?

Drop-in sessions are a lighter, more social introduction. The intensive program runs over 5 consecutive days and goes into more depth. You don't need to attend drop-in sessions before joining the intensive program but can be a helpful first step.
